Last week in one of my courses, Multimedia Storytelling, we had a guest speaker Skype into the class, Melody Alexander. Alexander is currently a Marketing Strategist for the University of Kansas, but in previous years was a copywriter for some small advertising agencies. After she spoke to our class, we were asked to answer the following questions:
What did you find the most interesting/surprising about Melody’s presentation?
One of the things I found most surprising about the presentation was all the different types of projects a university marketing team can work on. Typically you think they just work on ways to market the university to future students and events held on campus. But after her presentation, I realized that it’s so much more than that, and I actually liked it.
What did you wish you knew more about?
I wish I knew more about what a typically day looks like in this field and the pros/cons of collaboration. I would love to hear real-life stories of the process, and although we did hear some it just helps to hear more as a PR student who will have to be constantly collaboration with others in the future.
Summarize your overall reaction to the information she presented and how it might help you and your future career goals.
Overall, I enjoyed her presentation and how she had actual examples of work she had done included. It’s one thing to hear someone talk about it, it’s another thing to see it. Her examples were vivid and also diverse so we got a good feel of the projects she had been a part of. This can help me and my future goals because as mentioned previously, in public relations I will always have to be working with someone with different skills, even if it’s another PR professional with different skills than mine. It’s inspiring to see how amazing the collaborations can turn out as well.
